At Pet Wellness Veterinary Hospital (PWVH), preventive care is at the heart of our mission. We believe families deserve access to compassionate, high-quality veterinary care before a medical concern becomes a crisis. Preventive care gives us the chance to build trust early, answer questions, and help dogs and cats stay healthy, comfortable, and at home with the people who love them.
Preventive Care Is More Than Vaccines
Vaccines are important, but preventive care is more than a vaccine appointment. At PWVH, wellness visits look at the whole pet: weight, teeth, skin, heart, joints, behavior, nutrition, lifestyle, and risk for parasites or infectious disease. Every pet is different, so our recommendations are tailored to each dog or cat and the family caring for them.
Why Annual Exams Matter
For most dogs and cats, a veterinary exam at least once a year is recommended. These visits help us establish what is normal for your pet, notice subtle changes over time, and catch concerns such as dental disease, arthritis, weight changes, skin problems, diabetes, kidney disease, or thyroid disease before they become emergencies.
Core Pieces of a Preventive Care Plan
A good preventive care plan may include a physical exam, appropriate vaccinations, parasite screening and prevention, dental evaluation, nutrition guidance, weight management, and lab work when needed. Parasite prevention is especially important because heartworms, fleas, ticks, intestinal parasites, and tick-borne diseases can affect both pets and people.
Dental Health Is Whole-Body Health
Dental disease is one of the most common health issues we see in dogs and cats, and pets often continue eating even when their mouths hurt. Regular dental assessments help prevent pain, infection, tooth loss, and other complications for PWVH patients.
Prevention Can Be More Affordable Than Crisis Care
Preventive care can also make veterinary care more manageable for families. Routine wellness care, screening, and early intervention often provide more options and better information than waiting for a crisis. Through financially friendly options and our partnership with the Hanson Family Foundation’s Animal Resource Center and Pay-It-Forward Fund, PWVH is working to reduce barriers so more pets can receive essential care.
Your Veterinary Team Is Your Partner
At PWVH, we want clients to feel comfortable asking questions and sharing what they notice at home. Changes in appetite, thirst, energy, mobility, bathroom habits, behavior, or comfort may be the first sign that a pet needs help.
Our pets give us their trust every day. Preventive care is one way we honor that trust and support PWVH’s larger purpose: keeping pets and families together. If your dog or cat is due for a wellness exam, vaccines, parasite screening, or dental evaluation, I encourage you to schedule a visit with our team. A simple checkup today can make a meaningful difference in your pet’s tomorrow.
